The gap we fill

You've outgrown your tax preparer.
You're not ready for a full-time finance team.

Sumvera is built for the in-between. The season where revenue is climbing, the decisions get heavier, and good planning quietly compounds while guesswork gets expensive. We sit in that gap with you and think a year ahead, not just clean up last year.

About Sumvera

We think ahead.
Not just file behind.

Sumvera exists for the moment your income outgrows your system. The season where the money is real, the decisions are bigger, and last year's setup no longer fits. We work year round, not once a season, building a tax and financial strategy around where you are headed. And when the IRS shows up, we stand in front of it.

We work best with people whose income moved faster than the strategy behind it. Creators and entertainers. Athletes turning NIL and brand deals into real income. Independent service providers building something of their own. We work with others too. What our clients share isn't an industry. It's the decision to stop reacting and start planning.

Led by Faith Matlock-Johnson, a federally licensed Enrolled Agent admitted to represent taxpayers before the IRS, serving clients in all 50 states and internationally.

Frequently asked

The things people ask most before we start working together. If yours isn't here, reach out and we'll answer it directly.

Working with us
What is an Enrolled Agent?

An Enrolled Agent is a federally licensed tax practitioner and the highest credential the IRS awards. Earned through a three-part federal exam and ongoing continuing education, it carries unlimited rights to represent taxpayers before the IRS, including audits, collections, and appeals. Many people only know the letters CPA. An EA is the federal tax specialist, authorized to prepare your return and to stand in for you with the IRS directly.

Will you sign my return and include your PTIN?

Yes. As your paid preparer, we sign every return we prepare and include our IRS Preparer Tax Identification Number. We will never ask you to file something as if you prepared it yourself. A preparer who refuses to sign is a warning sign, and it is not how we work.

How do you protect my personal and financial information?

Security shapes how we operate. We are a paperless firm and run everything through a secure client portal. For your protection, we do not accept tax documents or sensitive details by email or text. Anything with personal information, like SSNs, financials, or IRS letters, is shared through the portal, where it stays encrypted and organized in one place.

Are you a remote firm? How do we work together?

We are a remote-first firm, which means a modern, secure, paperless experience without the drive across town. Client meetings happen over Google Meet, on your schedule, with the same focus and privacy as sitting across a desk. When an in-person conversation makes sense, we meet select clients on site or at a private, appointment-only workspace. You get flexibility, not a compromise.

Where are you located, and who can you work with?

We are based in Texas and work with clients in all 50 states and internationally. Because our credential is federal and our process is fully digital, where you live does not limit how well we can serve you.

How do you communicate with clients?

Day to day, we use the secure portal for documents and messages, scheduled Google Meet calls for strategy and review, and email for general, non-sensitive questions. Existing clients hear back within 24 hours, new inquiries within 48. We explain what we are doing and why, in plain language, without the jargon.

How do I access the client portal?

Your portal is at portal.sumveraadvisory.com. Existing clients sign in with the login created during onboarding. New clients receive access once we start working together.

Do I have to commit to full service, or can you just file my return?

You can come to us for a return and nothing else. Filing is a standalone service. Many clients start there and add strategy, bookkeeping, or CFO support as they grow. You are never required to buy more than you need.

What happens during the first consultation?

No judgment, no pressure, no sales pitch. We talk through your situation and goals, look at your prior year if it helps, flag deadlines, and tell you honestly how we can help and what it would cost. You leave with clarity on next steps, whether or not you decide to work with us.

Who is a good fit for your firm?

People whose income moved faster than the strategy behind it. Creators, entertainers, athletes with NIL and brand income, independent service providers, and business owners. We are also a strong fit if you have IRS notices, unfiled years, or simply want someone who explains things instead of just filing them. We work with others too.

Pricing and payment
How are your fees determined?

Fees are based on the complexity of your return, the forms required, the condition of your records, and any advisory work involved. We quote you after a short conversation, so you know the number before we begin. No surprise invoices.

Do you charge based on my refund?

No. Your refund belongs to you, and our fee is never a percentage of it. Any preparer who prices that way is a red flag, and the IRS warns against it.

Can you guarantee me a bigger refund?

No honest professional can promise a refund before reviewing your full picture, and anyone who does should worry you. Our job is to apply the law correctly, claim everything you legitimately qualify for, and explain the result so you understand it.

The tax preparation process
What documents do you need from me?

It depends on your situation. A W-2 employee needs different things than a self-employed creator, a rental owner, a business owner, or someone catching up on prior years. After we talk, we send a clear, personalized checklist through the portal so you are never guessing. Common items include your ID information, W-2s, 1099s, K-1s, and records for income, deductions, and expenses.

Why do you ask so many questions?

Because the questions protect you. They help us file accurately, catch deductions you qualify for, and avoid claiming anything we cannot support. Thorough intake is not red tape. It is how we keep your return clean and defensible.

Will I review my return before it is filed?

Always. Nothing is e-filed until you have reviewed it and signed your e-file authorization, Form 8879. You are ultimately accountable for what is on your return, so we make sure you understand it and your questions are answered before anything is submitted.

How long does the process take?

Once we have everything we need, preparation usually takes about five business days from start to finish. Timing depends on how complete your documents are, the complexity of your return, how quickly we hear back on questions, and how close we are to a deadline.

What types of returns do you prepare?

Individual, self-employed, partnership, S corporation, C corporation, estate and trust, multi-state, nonresident and international, amended, and prior-year returns, among others. See the full list in what we file.

Refunds and balances due
How long until I get my refund?

Preparation time and IRS processing time are two different things. Once filed, the IRS issues more than nine of ten refunds within 21 days, and direct deposit with e-file is the fastest route. You can usually check status about 24 hours after a current-year e-file, three days after a prior-year e-file, or four weeks after a paper return, using the IRS Where's My Refund tool.

Where will my refund be deposited?

Into your bank account, never ours. A preparer who routes your refund into their own account is a serious warning sign. Your money comes straight to you.

What if I owe instead of getting a refund?

Owing is not a failure, and avoiding it only makes it worse. We help you understand why, file correctly, and look at your options, which may include an IRS payment plan or, for eligible taxpayers, an offer in compromise that settles for less than the full amount. Eligibility depends on your facts, and we will tell you honestly where you stand.

IRS notices and tax problems
Will you help me if I get an IRS letter?

Yes. Do not panic and do not ignore it. Send it to us through the portal and we will tell you what it means and what, if anything, needs to happen. Simple clarification on a return we prepared is part of taking care of you. Full notice response or representation is a separate engagement, and we will be clear about that up front.

Does tax preparation include audit representation?

Preparing your return and representing you before the IRS are two different services. As an Enrolled Agent, we can represent you in an audit, collection, or appeal, handled under a separate representation engagement so the scope and cost are clear. We will never leave you to face the IRS alone.

Do you work with people who haven't filed in years?

Yes, and you are not the first. We start by pulling your IRS transcripts to see exactly where you stand, identify the missing years, prepare the required returns, and then address any balances or notices. It is fixable, and we will walk you through it without judgment.

Can you help with IRS debt, garnishments, levies, or notices?

Yes. This is core to our resolution work. We review your transcripts and balances, get authorized to represent you, and pursue the right path, from installment agreements to penalty relief or an offer in compromise. See how resolution works.

What if I find a mistake or get another form after filing?

Send it to us. We will determine whether an amended return is needed and handle it. A late document or a small error is normal and fixable. The worst move is ignoring it, so please do not.

Business owners and self-employed
Do you help me understand my numbers, or only file the return?

Both, if you want it. Tax preparation tells us what happened. Advisory helps you understand what it means and what to adjust going forward. Many clients start with a return and add controller or CFO support as they scale.

Is bookkeeping included with tax preparation?

They are separate services. Bookkeeping keeps your financials current through the year. Tax preparation files your return at year end. We offer both, and depending on your package your books are updated weekly, monthly, or quarterly.

Do you handle payroll?

Yes. We run payroll through an established provider such as Gusto or ADP, set it up correctly, and keep it running so your team is paid and your filings stay clean.

Do you handle business and Secretary of State filings?

Yes. We prepare and submit business compliance filings, including Secretary of State registrations and annual reports. One important note: we are not a law firm and do not provide legal advice. This is a document preparation and filing service. When a question calls for legal counsel, we will tell you it is time to bring in an attorney.

What records should I keep after filing?

Keep your filed return, W-2s and 1099s, receipts, mileage logs, bank statements, bookkeeping reports, charitable and business expense support, and any IRS or state letters. As a general rule, keep records for at least three years, and longer in certain situations. We will tell you if your case calls for more.

Hours and availability
What are your hours, and how do I reach you?

Monday through Friday, 9am to 6pm Central. Our line is handled by an answering service for general questions, and most conversations happen by appointment, so booking a time is the fastest way to reach a person.

Are you available after tax season?

Yes. We are a year-round firm, not a seasonal pop-up. Tax season ends, your questions do not, and we are here when they come up. That is the whole point of working ahead instead of just filing behind.

When are you closed?

We observe all major holidays and close for one week each in June, July, and August so our team can train and complete continuing education. Keeping our credentials sharp is part of what you are paying for.

Do you use AI? Is my data safe?

We use AI to work faster and stay responsive, but we never put your personal information into it and never share your PII. Sensitive details always stay inside the secure portal.
